Wearing the right gear is essential for safety and comfort when logging miles in any kind of weather.
Here’s some advice on what to wear running in every season.
Pro Tip: Use the “feels like” temp on your weather app when deciding what to wear on your run.
What to Wear Running in Spring, Temps 40 - 60 F
The key to dressing for springtime runs is layers. Spring weather can be unpredictable in many places. It could start raining or get windy without much notice. Layers help you stay prepared.
Good springtime running combinations include:
T-shirt and leggings
Tank top and leggings
Long-sleeve shirt and shorts
Add a lightweight windbreaker to any of the combos above and you’ll be good to go. A good windbreaker can help you regulate your body temperature if it feels a little too cold outside without adding bulk.
Our Top Pick: Unisex Camo Windbreaker
They’re available in green, black, and white.
What to Wear Running in Summer, Temps over 60 F
The key to dressing for summertime runs is moisture-wicking materials. Practically any other type of fabric will hold moisture (your sweat) and cause chaffing. This rule applies to everything from your underwear and socks to your shorts and shirts in summer running.
Good summertime running combinations include:
Tank top and shorts
Sports bra and shorts (ladies)
Just shorts (men)
Choose light colored clothing to help reflect the sun and be sure to wear sunscreen. Throw on some shades or a visor and you’re good to go.

What to Wear Running in Winter, Temps below 40 F
The key to dressing for winter runs is also layers. What and how many layers you put on depends on the temperature and weather conditions when you head out on your run. Be safe and wear more than you think you need. It’s easy to remove layers on winter runs but much harder to add them.
Good winter running combinations include:
Long-sleeve shirt, leggings, and hat
Long-sleeve shirt, shorts, and hat
Long-sleeve shirt, vest, leggings, and hat
Wear a hat to help keep your head warm. A lot of our body heat escapes through the top of our head. If it’s really cold, add a gaiter and gloves to the mix as well. You don’t want to get frostbite.
