What the American Flag Means to Us

On Independence Day, as we celebrate the birth of our nation, we’ll see American flags everywhere — from the clothes we wear to the sidewalks lining our neighborhoods. If you’re near a Team RWB chapter, or attend a local 4th of July Race, you’ll likely see Team RWB members proudly carrying the flag while running, too.

The American flag is more than just a symbol here at Team RWB. It's an integral part of our organization’s culture—a representation of the values we hold dear. Our name includes the colors. Our shirts prominently feature an American flag. Many of our members volunteered to serve and uphold the ideals it reflects.

At Team RWB, we strive to embody the values represented by the flag in all that we do. We bring veterans and civilians together to build strong communities. We empower veterans to lead purposeful lives and continue serving even after taking off the uniform.

When our members wear their shirts with a flag on the right shoulder, they're not just making a fashion statement - they're demonstrating their commitment to moving forward. Stars facing front, just as on military uniforms, as if moving in the breeze while they push ahead.

The story of the American flag is the story of our nation itself. It's a tale that begins in the earliest days of the Revolution when 13 colonies united in the fight for independence. That spirit of unity and common purpose is stitched into the very fabric of the flag, from the stripes representing the original colonies to the stars symbolizing the growing union.

The American flag flew over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812, inspiring Francis Scott Key to pen the poem that would become our national anthem. It was carried into battle by Union troops during the Civil War, a symbol of the fight to preserve the nation. In World War II, it was raised atop Mount Suribachi by US Marines on Iwo Jima, a moment captured in one of the most iconic photographs in American history. It's flown over moon landings, civil rights marches and small-town parades. It proudly flies over every U.S. military base and government building.

Throughout the centuries, Old Glory has been a beacon of hope, a rallying cry for freedom, and a symbol of the American spirit, just as it is here at Team RWB.

“It brought back my feelings of patriotism. It was such an honor to be able to carry the flag and see this flag waving in all its glory. It was emotional for me,” said Patty Mysior, an Air Force Retiree, after cycling with the flag as part of the Old Glory Relay.

That’s why our members are running 7.4 miles as part of our Firecracker Run Monthly Mission. In doing so, they'll be carrying the stories of their service, honoring the sacrifices made by generations of Americans to defend our freedom.

Whether you're a veteran or a supporter, this is your chance to carry the flag with pride, surrounded by a supportive team that embodies the best of the American spirit. Together, we'll pay tribute to the generations who have defended our liberty, while renewing our commitment to building a brighter future focused on health and wellness.
