Taking Rugged to the Next Level

Taking part in a Team Red, White & Blue (Team RWB) Eagle Expedition is guaranteed to be challenging, memorable, rewarding and rugged, but the Smoky Mountains Expedition took it to a new level.

Team RWB members from across the country traveled to the Smoky Mountains in May after completing a six-week training plan for the adventure ahead. Upon arrival, the weather forecast was a 10 percent chance of rain. By 5:30 that evening, a storm came in and a tornado watch was in effect. The motto for the week quickly became “adapt and overcome.”

While tackling their first hike, the group had to reroute due to a fallen tree damaging a bridge, which made a creek they were supposed to cross impassible. They were forced to set up camp in an area not planned, with temperatures dropping into the low 40’s.

With the storm holding steady and no end in sight, the group relied on each other, and their leader, Team RWB Area Director and Marine Corps veteran, Aaron Wolf for guidance and support.

"What an amazing and life-bettering expedition! Yes, I was a little apprehensive going into it, but Aaron's ability to move emotions from anxiousness to awesomeness is like no other. The bond we all built is everlasting and I am already looking forward to the next one,” said Team RWB Community Engagement Manager and Army veteran Jimmie Lucas.

Not only was the group forced to deal with bad weather conditions and tough terrain, they also encountered some potentially dangerous animals including a bear, wild hogs and snakes. Although anxious, uncertain and nervous, the group stuck together and took precautions to keep each other safe.

“In the shared misery and challenge, the team bonded and had to learn to rely on each other for assistance and support. The tribulations and trials certainly built strong bonds of friendship. Watching each teammate overcome their own doubts and perceived limits was very gratifying and inspiring,” said Team RWB member and Marine Corps service member John Richards.

“I met a great group of Eagles and felt an instant, natural connection with fellow veterans who enjoyed the outdoors, enjoyed the challenging physical activity, and enjoying sharing laughs and struggles together,” said Richards.
