A group of runners gathered in the early morning fog Saturday to participate in a 5k “flag run” just one day before many of them are scheduled to run in the Army Marathon.
About 60 runners gathered at the Courtyard by Marriott in Killeen on Saturday morning to participate in the run, which was organized by the Killeen chapter of Team Red, White and Blue. Team RWB is a national nonprofit organization that aims to engage veterans with the community through physical activity and athletics. The organization has between 60 and 65 chapters throughout the United States.
“Team RWB helps give veterans a sense of camaraderie and community,” said John Stasulli, Fort Hood chapter captain.
Georgina Beihl, regional director for Team RWB’s South Central Region, agreed. “We like to call it a community of communities,” said Beihl, who is from Houston. “You just show up wearing the eagle (the team’s logo), and you’re welcomed no matter where you are.” Team RWB runners wore the team’s red, white and blue colors and carried the American flag during Saturday’s run.
Many came from other parts or Texas, and even out of state to participate in the 5k flag run and the Army Marathon today.
“We have a lot of members come in from all over,” Stasulli said. “This was a chance for everyone to get to meet each other, and to raise awareness for Team Red, White and Blue.”
